I was thinking about Caterina’s bonnet, her finger up her nose and the existential roots of human suffering.  You know, the way we cling to fixed forms and categories in mind rather than understanding its impermanent and transitory nature, that it is fundamentally and ultimately empty of inherent existence.  And then I thought of Noah or the poet or Noah the poet or the poem’s `I’ or some shit like that having a food fight with a young woman who is into blueberries but into sex more and how they seem to use the behavioral coordinates of this blueberry context to have a mating dance, or something like that, if you know what I mean.  And then I began thinking about the Chauvet cave paintings, the Goldberg Variations (transcribed for strings), Lucy, the first human, the Bhagavad Gita, slavery, the holocaust, this amazing vegetable sandwich I’m eating and the crucial role language plays in human evolution.  I’m thinking about how, out of all the species, human beings kill their own kind, all over abstract ideas that have nothing to do with what’s real, I mean, what’s really real.  Yes, we grew out of a need to take care of infants and make tools, which in turn, made our brains more complex and sophisticated and gave us, not only the instinctively linguistic, that is, a learned communicative behavior, like honeybees dancing out intricate patterns of dance and song to indicate the specific locations of flowers; but this big round need gave us language itself, the interior consciousness of thoughts, images, concepts, symbols, mental representations and awareness.  But, why are we killing each other?  Why can’t we just pick blueberries and squish them all over each other and make smoothies out of our bodies?  Did we, in the middle of exchanging ideas and building communities, lose touch with nature and our own natures?  Did the bee in our bonnet become something other than a bee, an image, a symbol, an abstraction splitting us off from the experience of bee itself?  Have we lost the capacity to dance because we’re so much inside our heads, we’ve lost our minds?  We constructed the machine and now we’ve become the machine, our minds tick-tocking away in mechanistic anxiety because we can’t find the goddamn individual self and individual identity we duped ourselves into believing are real and so got stuck in our individual selves and identities and are killing each other to protect them.  How fucking insane is that?  Listen, all I want to do is hop on boulders in a mountain-nestled lake with a naked lover and watch swallows whim, juke and jink, while we gently roll blueberries on our tongues, and smile as they disappear into the swallow of our throats.  Is that asking too much?

 oh i love ducks! and just yesterday, as I had promised myself to think of bees everyday and send them light, i was walking down by the inlet in Inwood Hill Park and saw the ducks bobbing around in the water, and thought "I love ducks, in a similar way I love bees!" and this was just after I had spent 10 minutes admiring the confusion of some geese that had gotten separated from each other (half were inside the little league softball field, half were walking away in a line but those on the end of the line had stopped and turned around, calling back to those still inside the ball field, who were wanting to follow but were surrounded by a gate and were calling back, "how the HONK do I get the HONK outta here?") and having turned from them (just after I spent about 10 minutes cooing at some seagulls who had surrounded me, some were walking up to me with heads cocked as though I were going to throw them a herring, and i thought it might be that I had sprayed myself with some new perfume that I swear has some animal magnetism to it, perhaps these gulls smelled fish or food or the possibility of a romance like in the ads) just after an old guy with cane came staffing his way through the feathery thick, separating the sea of birds I was bonding with, I rounded the corner to the inlet where I came upon the ducks, a couple, mallard and she-duck, bobbing around in the water, their little triangular behinds popping up above the water as they -- who knows what they were doing under the water with their heads -- seemed to wag and mingle and I just love ducks, they are so round, like bees, but bees are like elements of our consciousness, elemental, like letters in the alphabet, dancing ancient and perfect maps to one another, and ducks are also elements, but like syllables, one syllable words, those round bodies, round heads, expressionless simple perfect perfect perfect, in pairs or in greater numbers, denoting rhythm, difference and unity just by their shape and random balance.  Who could invent the duck?  But why does their companionship always reflect my sadness? Why, when I see this one mallard to one she-duck (sometimes two), do I get this feeling of the impossibility of human companionship, that it can never be so simple, so expressionless and content? Why do I even go there?  They aren't about companionship at all!  They are ducks!  I am a snow white gull with cocked head sniffing out Eternity on the tail-end of a goose journey not wanting to leave my companions behind, wishing I could kiss him just once under the water and he'd smile, for once, and never leave me and we'd go humming humming alone into the fold and return with our pollen, bespeaking the worlds gone and coming in the wake gently closing around our feathered tushes.

I have a confession to make.

Mere paragraphs into Karen (Chai) Levy's essay, "Sexy Rabbi," a thought popped into my head. A thought that popped up repeatedly throughout my reading. A thought that distracted, annoyed, and delighted me. A desire, really.

I wished to see her.

Every time she mentioned her hips—my mind began to wander; my mouth began to water.

I even developed a bit of a crush—just like a few of her congregants—objectifying and idealizing her. But this delight was only one of my feelings participating in this upsurge (so to speak) of desire.

Conscious of the distraction, as my thoughts and fantasies persisted—along with her reminders about the objectifying nature of them—I began to feel annoyed. This annoyance even brought up shame, and fear.

Here I was, falling into the same familiar, typical male responses to a woman in a position of power. Am I, too, trapped in this defensive, somewhat detached, and highly distracting sexuality? How can I have a relationship of any sort with a woman if I am doomed to follow the same mindless patterns?

Herein lies the beauty of my response.

How, I ask, how can I deliver myself from this terrible impulse? And then I pause. Is it possible? Do I even truly wish to?

It seems pretty firmly planted in my mind that objectification is despicable, somehow evil.  It destroys relationship by denying the personhood of the Other.  The woman, in all her complexity and richness, is crushed into a mere object of my fancy.  What do I deduce from her posture, her mode of dress? Am I attracted to her?  Repelled?  On what fantasies does my mind take the two of us?  Do I wish to speak more with her?  And so on and so forth.  But where is the relationship in this? Where is she?  Nowhere to be found: masked by this veil of object-hood, which I have so barbarously thrust onto her. This objectification seems dastardly.

But I do not think this is the whole story, nor do I wish to remain in this limited space. As I asked, is it possible to rid myself of this impulse? Is it desirable?

Before looking at these questions I'd like to look a little more critically about the pitfalls of objectification.  What's wrong with objectification?

Levy somewhat recognizes opportunity in the moment of objectification, the opportunity for men "to realize that female rabbis are there to be spiritual leaders and teachers of Torah, not sex objects;" and the opportunity for "female rabbis … to take responsibility for setting appropriate limits."  But in the end I believe she equates objectification with victimization, something ultimately to be overcome.  I do not object to the strength or necessity of her argument, but I believe she is missing out on an even greater opportunity; namely, an opportunity to embrace objectification for precisely what it is.  In other words, I believe objectification offers an opportunity for a deepening of relationship through a cultivation of greater self-awareness.

I must slow down a bit, before I get caught up in my own writing. I have to come back down to the earth of the writing and be precise: just what am I saying? how and why am I saying it? what do these terms mean?

These kinds of questions are the same that can be applied to the moment of objectification, when awareness is applied.  What is it I am doing here? It is the first day of class, and I arrive early.  As yet the classroom is quiet; I take off my jacket and lay my notebook and pen on the table.  In the twenty minutes I am here, waiting for class to start, people begin to enter. Soon the table, at which I was alone just a few minutes ago, is populated and lively.  As the first classmates of mine enter we greet each other perhaps with a polite grin, or a nod; or perhaps nothing at all, if my doodling distracts me. If I recognize someone I will surely strike up a conversation, "How have you been? What classes are you taking?" But in this case all new faces appear and I steal glances at them, letting myself observe as though from a distance.  These people, men and women, are objects, not subjects. Not yet.  Of course, I will be glad to get to know them and begin to recognize them as subjects; but this happens precisely in this way, as process. 

The point is: of course I am objectifying.  The goal cannot be to eliminate objectification from relationship, because it is both a necessary step in relationship (I see you, and I approach you), and, further, an inescapable fact of relationship.  After all, you do show up as symbols in my dreams, and there is no way (nor any reason, in my mind) to escape the fact of our bodies. At the very least, these remain on some level objects, even once you and I have recognized each other as subjects.

The goal must be to recognize objectification's place in relationship.  The refrain tells us that relationship is hard work; well then we must be more rigorous. Why does objectification happen, and so frequently and naturally? There are many such questions. Just what is it to recognize each other as subjects?  Is it merely to say so?  Of course not—because this recognition occurs in and as relationship, not merely in conjecture upon relationship.  Recognition happens in a moment, not a vacuum.

I turn, then, to understanding and awareness.  So what do I do with my crush on the sexy rabbi? I cannot denounce it and attempt to purge myself of it as though it were the flu.  This would be a denial of my own subjective experience. I am, after all, having these desires.  I also cannot limit myself to self-judgment, drowning myself in shame as though I were simply evil, irreparably evil… No, better to find a more integrative position: I can observe my objectification.  I see no better first step to take.  Without sentence or judgment I recognize at once that I am objectifying Karen Levy.

This becomes even clearer in the context of something more of a relationship.  That same day in class I enter into a relationship with one person in particular—a woman.

As said previously: of course I objectify her.  But once again there is the opportunity—and I seize it: I observe and recognize my objectification of her.  As our relationship evolves I watch carefully, and slowly we begin to get to know each other better. We are entering into a deeper level of relationship.  One day while we are sitting next to each other, I glance over at her and she turns to me.  We suddenly find something different about the way we are looking at each other, and a deep feeling of warmth and safety envelops both of us. Where once there was idealization and objectification, now there is recognition.  Suddenly she and I recognize one another as subjects.

Two questions follow from this tale: first, how does this happen? second, what happens to the objectification thereafter?

I learned a new way of loving today, looking at you. At first it was longing, and then you turned to me, and we were looking inside each other's looking. And I transformed from thinking thing to feeling itself. And was still. And loving you, learned to love inside of relationship, and to live in love. Only now can I name the feelings, leaving that love-ness unnamed to be felt the next time you are near. I was bursting with joy, and shining with gratitude. Could you see in my looking how peaceful, how safe, and how trusting I am when held by your looking? So easy to give it a name, so casual to say: Ah, this is how love is. There are many kinds of love, and this one is new. It was nearly ecstatic, only I never stepped outside of myself, but rather felt more firmly situated within myself than before. That is the trust; that is the safety. How warm it is inside our mutual looking! I moved into feeling, to feel without needing to think it in order to understand it, to feel without defense, to feel without judgment... and feeling so clearly, I recognized myself. I was holding myself inside your looking, nourished, and knowing myself. Understanding is love; I learned to love myself through looking at you; and through recognizing myself, understanding myself, loving myself, I opened up to the possibility of recognizing, of understanding, of loving another. I could not see you until I looked into your looking, and saw myself, and opened my eyes. Through looking at you I am able to love myself, and through loving myself I become able to love you. And loving you is learning to share utterly. This is a new way of loving, one I could not learn on my own, but only through looking at you with you.

In this poem recognition of the other as a subject becomes possible as self-recognition arises; and self-recognition is enriched immensely through relationship.  It is precisely the self-recognition I here achieve in the other as object that allows me to recognize the other as subject.  Though here it is set in a slightly more complex way.  It is not directly one and then the other; it is something of a mutual arising.  And despite the feeling of suddenness, it does not arise out-of-nowhere.  At first it was longing, when you were still but an object for me—and then came the moment of shared recognition. 

When she turned one of us could have deflected the opportunity.  I could have directed my eyes to her lips, and then smiled a polite smile before turning back away.  We could have remained mere objects, but we instead observed more carefully than that—we took the opportunity.  Even then there is no transformation into pure subjects.  Neglecting all else, I do think that the fact of embodiment alone allows us to dispel such a notion.

This is not to romanticize objectification.  There is indeed a danger.  I could fall for the objectification and mistakenly believe that there is no more to the other than her sexy hips.  I can fall, like some members of Levy's congregation, for the idealization and move no deeper into the relationship.  If the objects I see are all somehow biologically inferior, this poses a very grave danger indeed.  I do not want to deny this danger, but only to make the focus on objectification clearer.  Objectification is a very limited mode of relationship.  But an impulse that is a great danger can be just as great an opportunity, and with self-awareness objectification becomes an integrated aspect of an intimate, flowering relationship.

Some beginning thoughts on James' poem.

“Have you noticed, God/ that lately I objectify you?”

We begin with an absurdity, the poem’s `I’ is talking to a God that either doesn’t exist, or, if He does, is very ungodly in his impotence; for He is a God who “scares so easily when subjectified.”  A flaccid, limp imitation of the once omnipotent, omnipresence hulk of a perhaps medieval deity before He lost his paradise, or, shall we say, footing; before, shall we say, James grew out of some former shell of a self and into his selfhood of looking.

But, there is something else already going on here, too.  Like many of James’ poems, there is a glaring nuance of feeling, of even deep conflict around feeling, around, shall we say, intimacy.  And this intimacy is not with Mother/God, it is with Father/God, I can just feel it.  To open up a poem with “Have you noticed…” already indicates that recognition is at least a major theme, if not the major theme.  I feel like I’m at the beginning of one of James’ songs, those beautiful lyrical paeans to longing.  Longing to be recognized, in this case.  But, the recognition is only ostensibly from an Other.  The type of recognition he is seeking in this poem feels superordinate to the psychological self, though, as he tells the “sexy rabbi,” it is a necessary aspect of the seeking for higher awareness, deeper intimacy. This I suspect is ultimately the type of self recognition that arises out of a developmental shifting between the psychological and spiritual levels of being; it is pure contemplative investigation.  It is St. John of the Cross dabbling in the “Dark Night of the Soul.” It already just feels that way; how can it not, he’s addressing “God.”  But, be very clear, at first, this is the psychological God of self, the once magical God of childhood (where most adults it seems still reside), the intrapsychic parentified fantasy God Who Makes, Shakes and intermittently flakes out on us when we don’t get what we want, or so painfully get what we didn’t want.  This is the idealized, anthropomorphic “objectified” God.  How romantic.

But, I, over time, grew suspicious, grew distant, grew tired of that game.  It’s just too oppressive and crippling.  It was stunting my growth and, worse, isolating me.  And so, over time, through the property of my perceptions, arguments, and language of my subjectivity, I began to grow out of; I began growing up.  Yes, the romantic of absence making the heart grow fonder still titillates me, like watching grass grow, the slow, burning longing of hope and desire fueled by Your no show, but now I am subjectifying (Y)you.  The clever James in his clunky understated snarky choice of words steps out onto the stage of mirrors to reveal his “coming” of age, his “right” to passage.  Do not try to dupe this young poet/philosopher, for he will subjectify you.  He will no longer let the grass grow under his feet, because awareness doesn’t grow on trees; there is no more time to waste.  He will accept the necessary growing pains but he might fight you along the way, indeed, take you for a ride; but, in the end, he will grow on you.  It seems he is learning, as Hegel asserted, “a subject is that which makes itself what it becomes."  And God is no exception.

But, who is God here that he puts under his subjective gaze of inquiry?  I think this God is the One and the Many; the theological, and therefore, philosophical First Cause and the manifested symbols of that First Symbol, in the authoritarian power structures that be, beginning with the father, whose first task is to “notice,” to recognize.  And why shouldn’t it be God that James addresses in this thinly veiled soliloquy?  As Woody Allen said, who better than God to model myself after?  And, I think James had another young philosopher in his mind, perhaps unconsciously, when he raised this mantle of illusion for investigation (for he is seeking understanding and in this understanding, is not to know to be?):

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep--

No more--and by a sleep to say we end

The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep--

To sleep--perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub,

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

Must give us pause. There's the respect

That makes calamity of so long life.

I was also thinking about this I-God relationship as the sort of archetypal Relationship--that this God is both father and mother, man and woman, even self--undeniably here, if feels expressed in the patriarchal form, this God feels like The Father.  But I love the primal feeing of this I-God enclosing all possible manifestations of relationship (disappointments, failures) and the potential for intimacy, growth in the knowing of self.

They're usually right on the other side of the boat.  or was that the life guard?
