And I’ve got the tan to prove it :)  The sweet taste of vacation, the time off in the cool breeze of quietude and rest.  Oh, yes, mind rests, too.  I was in Queens today (say what???), my old homestead, to get an over-due check-up and spend some time with my friend Andrea at the Forest Hills Tennis and Pool Country Club (what a little oasis in the midst of Queens).  Believe it or not, I’m healthier now than 10 years ago!  Who says sitting isn’t good for your health?  When I sit, I bring my body with me, I sauté it in light, I breathe in my mother’s love and the love of all mothers who are all my mothers; I bathe in the silence as my heart fills and opens like the sky after a summer shower; I rain compassion on all beings until the veil of ignorance is lifted, until we are all enlightened and no longer suffering, until it’s heaven, exactlyIn here everything just blows away, like a poem seeking souls to fill its shoes, to dream God’s eyes; in here my heart is beating, still strong, still steady, still pulsing gratitude.

 

After a delicious swim and drying off in the lounge of sunshine, I looked over in Andrea’s bag and saw Deepak Chopra’s `The Book of Secrets’ and started reading.  Whoa, Andrea.  Nice choice for summer reading.  Nice choice for the blog, I thought.  It’s a gem, for sure.  Particularly because Deepak, a physician, takes his Ayurvedic and Vedantic background and translates it into a very poetic contemporary prose.  Very accessible, very familiar, very much in line with Wilber and the evolution of consciousness.  How fortunate we all are to have access to the mystery of our own enlightenment potential.  These beautiful beings of wisdom, they’re all over the place.  Deepak finds the wisdom of consciousness in the body.  He calls it the body’s wisdom to the hidden dimension.  Here are some facts of daily existence (from p.8) that I would love for us to contemplate and discuss. 

 

  1. you have a higher purpose.
  2. you are in communion with the whole of life
  3. your awareness is always open to change.  From moment to moment, it senses everything in your environment.
  4.  you feel acceptance for all others as your equal, without judgment or prejudice.
  5.  you seize every moment with renewed creativity, not clinging to the old and outworn.
  6. your being is cradled in the rhythms of all the universe.  You feel safe and nurtured.
  7. your idea of efficiency is to let the flow of life bring you what you need.  Force, control, and struggle are not your way.
  8. you feel a sense of connection with your source.
  9. you are committed to giving as the source of all abundance.
  10. you see all change, including birth and death, against the background of immortality.  Whatever is unchanging is most real to you.

 

Take one or a few of these sentences and let’s talk about them.  We could do one a day if you’d like.  Respond in any way we’d like.  How about it?

 

 

After the pool, we went to the bookstore and I picked up another little gem, called `The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep,’ by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche.  Rinpoche discusses ways to use sleep and dream to further one’s practice based on Tibetan tradition.  I’ll read it next week on the Vineyard and report back.  As most of you know, I use dreamwork with my friends to help decipher deeper unconscious experience that might be either blocking or enhancing conscious strivings for self-awareness.  Blocking occurs when we get stuck in old, conditioned patterns of thinking.  Enhancement occurs when our dreams reveal shifts and transitions toward higher level awareness and integration.  From Rinpoche’s perspective, this type of dream and sleep practice, if you will, is nondual and so the unconscious and conscious aspects of consciousness are not separated.  This means that the meaning of dreams are less significant than how we use dream process to cultivate the wisdom of emptiness.  It’s not an either/or scenario but a complementary one, as far as I’m concerned.  A beautiful complementarity.

i'm only just beginning this book, but already i am struck by one thing most of all. frequently when i read beautiful words such as these, it feels that something is missing... a recognition of the difficulty it takes for someone to open up to these sorts of teachings (perhaps especially here in the West). it feels as though writers with immense wisdom are taking for granted that their words are being taken with deep earnestness; but frequently their words are met with skepticism and, perhaps even more frequently, laziness (fear). what i am immediately struck by in Deepak Chopra's book is his understanding of this limitation, this distance; and his explicit need to: "work on two fronts. First, [this book] must persuade you that there really is a mystery lying in the hidden dimensions of life. Second, it must inspire you to feel the passion and dedication required to get there" (page 3). a few pages later and he's already begun to do just that. this is really great stuff. it's a perfect time for me to be reading this! thanks Andrea! i'll respond to a specific line from the list tomorrow, Om. for now i need some sleep.

A CELL BY ANY OTHER MIND OR SPIRIT

 

James, I didn’t leave the wisdom of the body accidentally.  Deepak refers to the body as an “entry point into the hidden dimension of life.” The body represents just one aspect of consciousness, the level of biology, or the biosphere. In fact, the cell is a whole in one context but simultaneously a part in another (for example, a molecule is a part of a cell which in turn is part of an organ which in turn is part of a body which in turn is part of a mind, etc.). Though Deepak uses the body as an example of how evolution functions, the body is a recapitulated microcosm of the entire Kosmos.  A beautiful map on emptiness, indeed!  And yet, when we speak of a “higher purpose” (or any of the "facts of existence"), we are not speaking solely of the body and its wisdom.  We are speaking of consciousness itself as body/mind/spirit.  In fact, we can replace cell with mind and find the same patterns that connect.  When I asked about a higher purpose, I wasn’t limiting my view to the body.  I want to speak to a higher purpose in the very form we call being human. If we look to the body as a template, a working model of what evolution can teach, it can only be a teaching because mind is constructing the design that speaks to, for example, selfishness not being an option.  But, you see, in mind selfishness IS an option and that’s the rub.  With the freedom from embodiment comes also the great potential for error, degeneration. 

 

So, I appreciate your clarifying Deepak’s perspective and focus on the body as a guiding architecture of the evolution of consciousness but I don’t want to limit my inquiry to the body.  I did want to know from Emily (and all of us) what HER higher purpose is as a being of consciousness struggling to be a being aware of consciousness, in all its forms.  If we can substitute Deepak’s Higher Purpose of the cell with the human, it might look something like this:

 

"Higher purpose: Every [human being] in [this world, in his or her seed of consciousness] agrees to work for the welfare of the whole; [at its highest levels of awareness] individual welfare comes second. If necessary, [he/she] will die to protect the [world], and often does--- the lifetime of any given [human being] is a fraction of [the] lifetime [of the universe]. [Human beings] perish by the thousands every hour. [Though] selfishness is an option, [at its highest functioning awareness, selflessness governs], even when it comes to a[n individual's] own survival."

 

Deepak is well aware of this pattern that includes all things.  The scientist and systems theorist, Bertalanffy spoke of these levels of reality seeking a higher purpose (what he calls “order”): "Reality, in the modern conception, appears as a tremendous hierarchical order of organized entities, leading, in a superposition of many levels, from physical and chemical to biological and sociological systems. Such hierarchical structure and combination into systems of ever higher order, is characteristic of reality as a whole and is of fundamental importance especially in biology, psychology and sociology." (Ludwig Bertalanffy, General Systems Theory, pp. 74, 87.)

I ask:  Higher than what?

This is my first response, (although I know what the question is alluding to).   Higher than just being here, breathing in and out everyday?   Higher than caring for my family and friends?   Higher than caring for the people who work at my home and the people who live there and the families who need support?   How do I think of myself as having a higher purpose without getting my ego involved in thinking that I am higher than this or that?   What is this a measurement against?  

 

I thought when I looked at this question it would be so easy. I have a zillion stock answers.   I am here to create good, to live compassionately, to listen attentively, to act with love instead of anger,,self hatred, selfishness.  Is this a higher purpose?   I am simply a person, a jewbu, a neurotic, clinging friend and mother and wife, full of foolishness, self deception; sometimes lazy, sometimes hazy.  Sometimes I have an abundance of love, compassion, pure good will.  I am all these things and more.  My purpose in life is to be kind, to spread it as best as I can, to stop torturing myself when my ego is bruised, to keep working at being present, to see things as they appear, and to bow to what is with an easy and pure heart.   Is this a higher purpose?   Beats me.  It is a purpose.  But higher than what?

 Om didn't quite reveal everything about Deepak's list, and he leaves out something i find actually quite important. even though it doesn't change the meaning, it certainly makes the meaning a lot more clear to me, and a lot more beautiful. Om did mention that it's the "body's wisdom to the hidden dimension," but then he just leaves these little nuggets as "facts of daily existence." this is all straight from Deepak, but there's an important addition.

 

Emily read this and immediately took "you" to mean : you, Emily. i did the same thing. i hadn't yet started to read the book, and i just read Om's post and i thought, "Are you talking to me?" but then i came upon the immediate framework for Deepak's list... it's "The Wisdom You Are Already Living," because it refers directly to one of your cells. immediately after sharing hte list, Deepak writes, "None of these items are spiritual aspirations; they are facts of daily existence at the level of your cells." wonderful! and then he goes on to explain each one. he revisits them in different ways two, three times -- he doesn't just leave it up to the imagination.

 

i also was hoping to begin right from the top, and so i'll begin with the first explanation he offers:

 

"Higher purpose: Every cell in your body agrees to work for the welfare of the whole; its individual welfare comes second. If necessary, it will die to protect the body, and often does--- the lifetime of any given cell is a fraction of our own lifetime. Skin cells perish by the thousands every hour, as do immune cells fighting off invading microbes. Selfishness is not an option, even when it comes to a cell's own survival."

 

suddenly, Emily, your questioning comes into much sharper contact with item number one on the list. there is, of course, a movement in Deepak's book from the cellular level to the level of our daily existences, and you can easily see where it might go (though careful: there is no judgment in any of this. when he asks you to follow the wisdom of your body and choose one or more of these qualities to try to follow today, he says: "Don't strain for self-improvement; don't write from a sense that you are weak or inadequate. The purpose here is to extend your body's comfort zone into behavior and feeling." more purpose ;)

 

but what most interests me is your word "stock": "I have a zillion stock answers." that word throws me off! sorry to just hone in on one word like this, but it really does throw me off. what you had written up to that point seemed like such clear and appropriate answers to your question, and they felt so intensely Emily; when i came upon the term "stock answers" it surprised me because i take that phrase to mean hackneyed, unoriginal, clichéd... answers that don't come from you, but you just pluck from the list of generally accepted answers. did you mean this, or am i just being too ... well, i don't know, too something?

How about higher than you are now but not as high as you were last night (LOL!!!!).  The way I translated Deepak’s facts of existence was from the perspective of sequentially increasing self awareness and increasing awareness through the dissolution of self.  And so, higher is not higher than, but rather the effects of increased awareness in one’s life.  This means to focus the mind very intently on purpose itself, for how can self-realization occur without mindfulness of one’s basic ignorance?

 

Deepak is not referring to a “measurement” as you seem to suggest.  And these acts of lovingkindness and compassion you refer to are part and parcel of that higher purpose, but they are the exterior aspects of an overall unifying consciousness.  What I see a higher purpose in your post is this: “to keep working at being present, to see things as they appear, and to bow to what is with an easy and pure heart.”  But, it’s not higher than “what,” nor heaven exactly.

Oh I was high last night alright, on Trumpka and Virginia Woolf, my primary sources of inhalation these days.   I think I was was being a bit off handed in my response to the higher purpose question- which is the reason I used the word " stock" James, because sometimes, higher awareness if just plain old exhausting, and after my time in California I was amused by how these kind of questions become all about ego - so many type A personalities with the focus on relaxation, enlightment, etc, that can permeate the air out West, along with the real fragrances.  There is alot of marathon running to reach the greatest spirtual heights. So, my head was just spinning with things like, " I want to do good in the world, I want to make a difference.... words that often have no committment behind them.   I tihnk I was longing for someone to just ask, "did you have a good shit today - now, isn't that as just meaninful; you know the nuts and bolts of life.  ( Oh, am I getting cranky - must be time for the cushion).  I don't mean to be glib - well, maybe I do, but just for the moment.  My brain is tried.  I crawl to my cushion everyday, sit llke royalty, feel myself and don't feel myself, then walk tall for awhile, then slide into old patterns of thought, then go back to sitting and crawling and walking tall, again and again.   I sink low to rise high.  I am, at times such a neurotic mess, but I celebrate the roots of my craziness because, well, I must.  And what joy when I met an airconditioning man on the street todaym, and we spoke for a few minutes and Yes, I heard it, I detected it, that Baltimore accent ; so I said, "Are you from B TOWN? "and yes, yes, he was, and we went to high school together.   Joy in all kinds of places.  So he knows, where I come from, the Jewish community where I was raised, the deli sandwiches, the small ghetto: we are connected, connected, connected like you and me - minus your non Baltimore accents.

A GOD BY ANY OTHER EXACTLY: ON `SOME SAY HEAVEN’

 

If you would have looked close enough, you would have noticed that I’ve been playing with James’ poem, `some say heaven,’ particularly the first line: “some say heaven, but it's not heaven exactly.”  Let’s face it, James has the ability to play with language in such a way that language ought to feel noble.  It is towards this kind of magnanimity, lofty and elevated, that language emerged and evolved across the throes of biological entropy.  What would the body do without mind taking it by its hand and pointing to heaven?  How would body, as intelligent as it is (and Deepak will demonstrate this), know the "mystery lying in the hidden dimensions of life”? And, even if it did, how would body alone “inspire you to feel the passion and dedication required to get there"?  Though heaven speaks through the body, it is not heaven exactly.  “that’s eternity.” 

 

Okay, so James, in his so Jamesian way of uncovery and layering, will not let us rest in the body of facts (or the facts of body); he demands (if we are to appreciate his poems) that we elevate our experience to the heights of which only language can achieve (even if language is not the final stop).  Language must remind us of the fundamental illusion (and our deluded use of that illusion) and relativity of reality if it is a true pointer (meaning means to point).  “some say heaven, but it's not heaven exactly.”  What’s not heaven?  What is he referring to?  Is heaven itself not heaven?  How could this be?  No, that heaven, that ineffable plane of indescribability is “eternity.”  The heaven that can be named must not be heaven.  And you see, only language can do that.  And James has that rare ability to make language do that: point out the ineffable with the palpability that language almost is.  That’s not heaven, because I named it; this is heaven because I point to its eternality through this linguistic referent called “eternity.”

 

And to anti it up even more, “up here everything just blows away.”  Now, I’m experiencing the top of the Himalayan world but I’m also experiencing impermanence of which the “up here” of language is part because language is a phenomenon and all phenomena are empty of permanent, independent existence.  Including souls.  Oh yes, souls exist but we’re not sure they exist in any real way.  Nor God for that matter, “God, You poet.”  Ooh, I just got a shot of Wallace Stevens: “God, You poet.”  Is this ex-atheist slipping into an almost agnostic large cap(God/You), kind of like opening-up-to-the-mystery-the beauty-the awe-of-“the-hidden-dimensions-of-life”?   

 

“i wish i'd dream Your eyes, God,/just once more, so they could haunt/me awhile longer.”  And now he has the balls to oh so subtly invoke Rilke! Only Rilke could get away with a word such as “haunt” to describe God or angels.  Rilke says, “My God is dark.”

But, James unabashedly and playfully gets away with it because, he could, exactly.  And you know the man is deepening and really cultivating that empathy in all its beautifully diverse forms because, though “i'll never see a heaven that lasts,/… i'm holding on... just awhile longer.”

 

“it's Your eyes, God— they saw me once.”  Okay, this is really cool because long after James wrote this jewel, he happened upon (as I did) these lovely words by Deepak: “The mystery of life [is]…how to bring them [a constant stream of clues hinting at a deeper reality] to the surface.  If someone asked me how to prove that there really is a mystery of life, the simplest proof would be just this enormous separation between deep reality and everyday existence…. Haven’t you ever fallen into a moment of wonder?  Such moments may come in the presence of beautiful music, or at the sight of natural beauty that sends a shiver up your spine.”  Or, exactly this:

 

“I learned a new way of loving today, looking at you. At first it was longing, and then you turned to me, and we were looking inside each other’s looking. And I transformed from thinking thing to feeling itself. And was still. And loving you, learned to love inside of relationship, and to live in love. Only now can I name the feelings, leaving that love-ness unnamed to be felt the next time you are near. I was bursting with joy, and shining with gratitude. Could you see in my looking how peaceful, how safe, and how trusting I am when held by your looking? So easy to give it a name, so casual to say: Ah, this is how love is. There are many kinds of love, and this one is new. It was nearly ecstatic, only I never stepped outside of myself, but rather felt more firmly situated within myself than before. That is the trust; that is the safety. How warm it is inside our mutual looking! I moved into feeling, to feel without needing to think it in order to understand it, to feel without defense, to feel without judgment... and feeling so clearly, I recognized myself. I was holding myself inside your looking, nourished, and knowing myself. Understanding is love; I learned to love myself through looking at you; and through recognizing myself, understanding myself, loving myself, I opened up to the possibility of recognizing, of understanding, of loving another. I could not see you until I looked into your looking, and saw myself, and opened my eyes. Through looking at you I am able to love myself, and through loving myself I become able to love you. And loving you is learning to share utterly. This is a new way of loving, one I could not learn on my own, but only through looking at you with you.”

EMPTINESS, A DEEPER INTENT?

 

 

I would like to quote at length this excerpt from Chopra’s `The Book of Secrets.’  The reason is to share an exquisite example of emptiness as it relates to actual reality, or reality as we actually encounter it.

 

Science has no idea why metamorphosis evolved.  It is almost impossible to imagine that insects hit on it by chance – the chemical complexity of turning into a butterfly is incredible; thousands of steps are all minutely interconnected.  

 

But we do have some idea about how this delicate chain of events is linked.  Two hormones, one called juvenile hormone, the other ecdysone, regulate the process, which looks to the naked eye like a caterpillar dissolving into soup.  These two hormones make sure that the cells moving from larva to butterfly know where they are going and how they are to change.  Some cells are told to die; others digest themselves, while still others turn into eyes, antennae, and wings.  This implies a fragile rhythm that must remain in precise balance between creation and destruction.  That rhythm, it turns out, depends on day length, which in turn depends on the earth’s rotation around the sun.  Therefore, a cosmic rhythm has been intimately connected to the birth of butterflies for millions of years.

 

Science concentrates on the molecules, but this is a striking example of intelligence at work, using molecules as a vehicle for its own intent.  The intent in this case was to create a new creature without wasting old ingredients. (And if there is only one reality, we can’t say, as science does, that day length causes the pupa’s hormones to begin the metamorphosis into a butterfly.  Day length and hormones come from the same creative source, weaving one reality.  That source uses cosmic rhythms or molecules as it sees fit.  Day length doesn’t cause hormones to change any more than hormones cause the day to change – both are tied to a hidden intelligence that creates both at once.  In a dream or a painting, a boy may hit the baseball, but his bat doesn’t cause the ball to fly through the air.  The whole dream or painting fits together seamlessly).  P 23-24  (highlight mine)

Deepak has chosen a very specific vocabulary that we can easily identify with certain larger or more general ideas, such as, emptiness and dependent origination.  For example, “Day length and hormones come from the same creative source, weaving one reality” suggests the idea of emptiness as well as dependent origination: “Day length doesn’t cause hormones to change any more than hormones cause the day to change – both are tied to a hidden intelligence that creates both at once.”  Deepak is an Indian with deep roots (if I’m correct) in Vedanta and so leans towards a theistic mindset (Brahman).  This is the idea of “design.”  Nagarjuna’s Buddhist philosophy would not discuss cosmology in these terms (for example, design) but would emphasize causal reality as Deepak does here.  Specifically, when discussing the 12 limbs of dependent origination (human functioning), Komiko uses almost the exact terminology as Deepak: “.  That rhythm, it turns out, depends on day length, which in turn depends on the earth’s rotation around the sun.  Therefore, a cosmic rhythm has been intimately connected to the birth of butterflies for millions of years.”  Depends on is a nondual way of talking about causation.  It is not meant in the mechanistic way Western science purports, but suggests that certain conditions and causes are prerequisite for an effect to be realized.  This is what is meant by co-arising: “both are tied to a hidden intelligence that creates both at once.  In a dream or a painting, a boy may hit the baseball, but his bat doesn’t cause the ball to fly through the air.  The whole dream or painting fits together seamlessly.” 

 

And so I come to the title of this post: EMPTINESS, A DEEPER INTENT?  The question mark is both questioning the nature of intent and suggesting the bifurcation of Buddhist and Vedantic cosmology.  Whether there is, as Deepak argues, an overarching or ultimate intelligent design (God? Brahman?) or merely an infinite stream of causality under the rubric of Buddhist cosmology, doesn’t really matter.  What matters are the ethical and psychological implications of understanding this great web of life which indeed has a magnificent, ostensibly mysterious and miraculous intelligence and which, as far as we can see, follows an evolutionary stream of consciousness moving toward more complex, organized and integral levels of awareness and thus meaning that will hopefully result in the preservation of our planet and a kinder and more compassionate and intelligent humanity. 

 

And believe it or not, the source of this wisdom and compassion can be realized in the stillness and silence of meditation.

There are times when I am sitting when a thought or memory passes, something I had  had no idea was anywhere near the surface of consciouness or was, for that matter, even swirling around in the depths.   I tend to let them pass right by - as Trunkpa says : I bring my wild horse mind back to the path.  If it was something important, it comes back to me like a little pearl in a wrapped box.

 

I have been having that wonderful experience of lately of just falling into quiet; feeling myself between sky and earth in a very sturdy way.  Recently my Yoga teacher helped me understand how my neck sits on top of my shoulders so that I could correctly myself when I am not in alignment.  It has become automatic now.  It makes settling into my seat very fluid and lovely. 

 

I am very emotional lately.  Anya and I cry in a lovely way together.  We love each other so much and can't help but acknowledge the transition that it coming into our lives.  When I feel overwhelmed I sit.  I realized that my body - this form of mine - just isn't large enough to contain all my emotions.  When I sit and dissolve I am so much more - and am able to let my feelings rise without fear of breakage.

I had this experience after I had been sitting and I was surprised because although I didn’t sit longer than 15 minutes I really felt at peace and had been able to quiet my mind and dissolve the anxiety I was feeling from the high pressured projects I was working on this week. My neck and shoulder muscles had relaxed and I even thought my face looked so much less tired than before I sat. It was only a few minutes after I was sitting when I realized that I was feeling afraid as if I thought I felt someone in my apartment. An old thought pattern that I use to struggle with a lot more and has been popping in here and there a little bit this summer but it just seemed so out of place since I was just quieting my mind and felt so relaxed.  I am trying to understand if meditating had any play in this feeling/memory. I wonder, was I feeling this way and hadn’t recognized it because of all the stress and noise of my every day life and once I quieted my mind it surfaced or had something unrelated to sitting brought this emotion forth? 

It is such a great gift to be able to recognize and share with Anya the overwhelming feelings of the change you are both experiencing.  To be able to cry together is such an intimate exchange one many daughters and Mother’s struggle with.  What a great way to honor the transition of moving from such an important stage of her life and the beginning of so many undiscovered opportunities.   

I am doing okay I am struggling between being very emotional and weepy and very defiant and volatile.  I am either wide-open and my emotions are gushing out or I am completely blocked and wanting to shut down.  I can’t really find a balance between the two for the last few weeks. I manage to have a few days when I feel good, clear and relaxed and of course those are when I have enough time to go to yoga, to sit, to eat well and to write but I can’t seem to keep that steady pace.

Your post reminded me of something my teacher told me to do when I am feeling anxious or sad, or just.... when I am sitting.  He asked if I could enter the feeling, just enter it and be with it.    Not to attach anything to it other than identifying it as a feeling..  I find that this really helps me.  Otherwise I begin to attach a story to it.  I fall into my old pattern of anxious thoughts and get stuck on the treadmill of a racing mind that I can't get off. 

 

I really have gotten so much from you and others sharing their sitting practice.  I used to think that I was the only one with obsessive thoughts....  quite an ego to think that.  Our minds are really something, arent' they?

 

It is hard to keep a steady pace, but it does get easier and easier.  I run to my cushion or just stop for a moment to bring myself home.  My teacher always stops in doorways as a way to stay mindful.  I bow to the flowers on my balcony several times a day to remind myself that there is such beauty if I stop to look.  I love bowing.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, as they reflect some of my roller coaster ride of emotions too, and remind me it is part of being human.

 

I am trying to get into a meditation practice, but I still resist it.  Instead, I try to find peace in the everyday things, such as a beautiful day, a flower, a bird or lofty clouds shining bright in front of the sun.  In those moments I try to put everything else aside and be in the moments.  But then I snap out of it and swing to the other side and find myself wearing my emotions on my sleeve.

 

Megan, I think those feelings you feel after meditating are there from before.  Your mind would just not let you feel them because of all the clutter it creates just to avoid them.  I find myself doing the same thing and I find I have to sit with these new-old friends.

 

Anyway, on a more important note, what happened to August?  It's cool at night.  I like it, but it seems like I have been robbed of a few summer weeks.

 I love the idea of bowing to the flowers and of stopping in doorways Emily. That is a really nice idea.  Not entirely the same, but I stopped running down the stairs at subway stations about six months ago and if I just miss a train well then I take a few more minutes to just stand there and have sometime to relax. i think mediation is hard to understand and to master and it is usually done in a personal setting, I agree hearing struggles and advice is very helpful.  I wonder if being fearful meant that I just didn’t sit long enough for that feeling to rise to my consciousness and dissolve. Nico, I can understand resistance all too well lately. I am usually pretty open to all of this and lately it is hard for me to let it in and believe it. I can feel the anger take a stronger hold then usual and I let it win more than usual, cause I’d like more than anything else to shut out the world and sleep for a few months, or jump on a plane and go experience a few months in another country till I am ready to work at it again.  I am trying not to focus on it too much and just be. I think walking and appreciating the beauty around you is a great first step to mediation.  You know there is such a thing as walking mediation; I do not know much about it. I think if you make room to walk and clear your mind you can work your way up to meditation. I went to a mediation class and the instructor played weird music and actually did more chair stretching and what I now know is the corpse pose instead of mediation/sitting as we refer to it here. But it was actually a good place to start because it helped me to relax and it introduced me to yoga.  I learned later on that I shouldn’t be playing music while mediating. Surprisingly I started enjoying his new age music and purchased it online. Sometimes when I want to relax I listen to the album on the train, or walking home and my body almost naturally wants to stretch or sit. It makes it so much easier to clear my mind and be ready to sit if I have had time beforehand.  If I have a particularly stressful day or a lot on my mind, I’ll listen to it on the subway on my way to yoga. It is a really nice bridge between work and yoga and it sort of tells my mind and body that we are leaving one activity to do another.  The yoga class I go to now is an hour and a half. I like it a lot because they start and end each session with mediation. I find that it is much easier to mediate in a group and as part of a yoga practice. Another thing that helps is that I started meditating before bed, so I left my cushion on the floor next to my bed, it reminds me to sit and it reminds me to start my day by sitting.  Granted I still haven’t gotten past 15 minutes but it is all a work in progress my friend. So maybe Nico, you just haven’t found the formula that works the best for you, I have faith that you will. Hope my journey helps you think of the ways you can get there. 

 

ps. I'm Not sure where summer went, but i'd like it back. You know I feel like this always happens and then September we are bound to get a heat wave.

Summer is back.  It was really nice to sweat a little bit today, even in my car lost in Maspeth, Queens, in the industrial part of it where it's too large and i felt so small.  i didn't put on the ac just to feel the heat.  i think i my body adjusts to the heat and then doesn't want to fall back into the comfort of the cool ac.

 

last week i was angry and very confrontational.  i was tested many times, and each time i had to remind myself to be compassionate.  only two times did i become outwardly aggressive.  one time going up the subway stairs this guy came around the bend and got right in my face expecting me to move out of his way.  i was the only one on the stairs and there were two lanes for him to go around me, yet he chose to right in my face.  i just stopped, stared him with great annoyance and then he went around me.  as he walked away, he called me an asshole.  yikes, what did i do wrong?  in his eyes, i guess i didn't move out of his way.  but why should have i?

 

and then someone in the top floor of my building decided to vomit out the window, leaving nice vomit streaks on my window and some partly digested chicken on my window sill.  i sort of know the guys who could have done this and they are bonafide MEATHEADS.  i was so mad, i want to go up there and confront them.  but i knew this would probably lead to a fight.  instead i called the landlord and complained.  at least i did something.

 

in all this turbulance, i did manage to meditate for 10 minutes on sunday.  i was having trouble sitting until i went back to something i used to do as a child to go to sleep; i started rocking back and forth very slightly.  it really helped, my thoughts calmed down, and my head sort of cleared.  i will do it again tonight.

 

so how are you?  are you finding more moments of peace?  are you feeling your feelings?

Hi Nico, It is nice to hear from you, happy to hear that you were able to mediate.  It sounds like once you were able to focus on the rocking you were able to calm and quiet your mind. It is similar to a trick my chiropractor uses on me.  He has me wiggle my big toe when I do not relax my neck enough, this way while I focus on my toe he can adjust my neck.  Sounds so simple, but it works every time.  Sounds like a good place to start. Good for you.  Another trick to help focus on your breath you can count your breath in and out or say to yourself  “I Am”, “I” on the breath in and “Am” on the breath out, it works pretty well. I read it in an article by Deepak a while back and when I am struggling focusing on my breath I repeat it over and over until the Am becomes as long as my outward breath and almost just a sound in my head. 

Good for you that you were able to notice your anger and not outwardly react to it.  It is interesting how many moments we have that we can easily get angry living in this city. If we wanted to we could spend most of our days angry considering the obstacles of ever commuting on mass transit.  I imagine that gentlemen didn’t know what to do with his anger when you didn’t respond in the way that he expected. I wonder what would happen with all the anger if enough people didn’t respond. 

Yesterday I jumped on an early train from Long Island that was an express in hopes to get home and beat everyone else from the Hamptons and beaches, which usually means you, have to sit on the floor. To my surprise many others had the same idea and I had to sit in a bucket seat across from the bathroom. Half way to the city our train broke down and we sat for 40 minutes while the conductor’s struggled with something between my car and the next from the tracks.  I glanced out the window to one conductor covered in grease and two woman holding walkies and cell phones looking perplexed. I thought, hmm, maybe I should be alarmed. During the 40 minutes that we sat there at least 75 people went to the bathroom, every other one coming out to explain that the toilet wasn’t flushing to the waiting line. I was wondering if I should just go search the aisles for another seat or wait to see if the bathroom started overflowing before I took a run for it. I decided it couldn’t be too bad if people were still going in and staying in and there might not be another seat and it had to be over soon, plus I had a good book, so I read and started guessing which bathroom occupants would be most likely to tell the next of the non working toilet and which would just go on their merry way.  It passed the time although it was certainly one of the few times I wanted to disown my abnormally strong sense of smell.  I had to laugh at the whole scene and I knew that if I was feeling differently I would be annoyed instead of laughing.  The irony, was that I told my family I wanted to get home early instead of sticking around for barbeque I was sitting on a train wondering how much longer we could sit there and if all the trains behind us were also sitting.  I was certainly grateful when we started moving again and then a woman hit the emergency button because she thought the train was a local and the train passed her stop. The conductor kept saying, “What is your emergency.”  and the woman said, “I was supposed to get off back there.” The conductor then said, “I a sorry this is an express to Jamaica” and this circular conversation that was going nowhere continued for a few more loops of the same commentary. I am not sure I would have been as patient if this woman had caused us to stop again and I was pretty grateful to see Jamaica and know I was almost home.  Overall, I am doing okay, not really bad, not really great, nothing is standing out at me. Pretty busy at work and working to balance my personal and professional responsibilities while making time for all the things that keep me feeling good and healthy. Certainly a lot of work goes into it so I am trying to just be. This knowing your emotions is not so easy to do. I’ve started reading the first few pages on The Book of Secrets and I’m pretty deep into a book called, The Freedom Writers Diary which I am enjoying even though I usually can not handle stories of violence the truthfulness of the diary entries, the struggles and growth of the students and the compassion of their dear teacher is really keeping me engaged. I see myself and people who have passed through my life in every page.  I ran into this book on accident when I was working late and waiting for a meeting to end I took a stroll to the bookstore and was looking to escape in a meaningless chic lit book, I was convinced that I needed a break from thinking so much. I stopped to look something up on my phone and looked up and the Freedom Writers Diaries caught my eye and I read the back cover and first few pages and knew that it was exactly what I needed to read right now. Funny how that works, the universe supplying exactly what I need.

Megan, i totally understand when you say the universe supplies what we need.  sometimes, i think, my anger, fears and psychology gets in the way of seeing what is being offered, but when i let go, it all settles down and clears up.

 

just last week i was walking home, i was hungry, and i ddin't have one dollar in my pocket (the atm was six blocks away and i was too lazy to go).  instantly, as i was thinking this, i spotted a $5 bill on the ground!  holy shit, imagine what else is being offered to me that i am not seeing!

 

you're much more patient than me.  i would have ran to the other on of the train to get away from that bathroom mess.  and i would have been fuming at the person who hit the brakes because she thought she missed her stop (i mean, come on, how selfish is that? - anyway, as you can see, selfishness makes me angry because i feel unrecognized by the other).

 

anyway, have fun and let the universe keep on giving.

I love this Nico, I know that my anger, judgment, shame and fear gets in the way of being free of suffering if I think about it I always knew that. That is why I never really fit in, and I always knew there was something else something better.  I worked really hard to move out of my house, to put myself through school, to be the hardest worker at my job, but all I've been trying to do is accomplish my way out of feeling emotions that I wasn't in touch with. And I still wasn't recognized for all of this so it only made me feel worse.  It's like I run this race with myself, do, do do and the 'doing' makes me feel great and better than others so this way I don't feel bad about myself. But then I get tired and burnt out and frustrated because the others do not recognize and meet me needs and give back as much as I give and so I am angry, and shameful and back to not believing I do not deserve any better and I retreat. I isolate myself from anything that can cause me anymore pain and step back till I can find that fire to fight again and by fight I do. I didn't know how to make it all stop and I didn't have the tools to recognize and dissolve and face issues differently.

 

Now that I know better, I'm frustrated because it is so darn hard. Go figure, as if it is any harder than supporting myself at 17. And although I know it is laziness fueled by fear. Nonetheless, I've been left with this feeling that I'll never find that balance. I get angry because it seems like the more I know the less I actually know and understand and I am not so sure I am ever going to be able to cross the bridge of acceptance some of these theories. So right now instead of getting so overwhelmed and angry, my strategy I ignore those thoughts and just practice as much as I can each day. And I'll admit that maybe by ignoring I am just learning to not let them take over. If I am not ready to grasp the finer points of Buddhism then that is okay too because my priority is fine tuning my life to alleviate as much suffering as I can each day. I cannot alleviate the suffering of others if I cannot alleviate mine. (and I know James and Om will jump all over me and say that my suffering is others, yes, yes boys I know, I know, I know)

Super post, Megan.  So many things to touch upon, so i'll begin by asking you what you mean by this:

Is the "laziness" some sort of resignation at some level that your needs will not be met so you don't want to try because disappointment is inevitable?

i experience the same in a way.  sometimes i can't motivate myself to do much, even things that i care about.  most of my life has been like that and i always thought i was lazy and a procrastinator to the bone.  now i realize that alot of it comes from learning disappointment early on when my feelings and needs weren't recognized by my family and friends.  in fact, i was taught to sacrifice for my family, to always put the needs of the group ahead of mine.  of course, the question then screams to be asked; why do anything if i'm not taking care of my needs and feelings?

hence, it felt like a waste of time and effort subconsciously so i didn't try much, and that then looks like laziness.

i can only imagine that having to take care of yourself so early on, you must have sacrificed many of your emotional needs just to take of your living needs and those of your family.  it must have been excruciatingly tough.  but those feelings you learned to control so long ago are  coming back, and though they are tough to experience, it is also i great chance to learn to integrate them into the rest of you.

at least that's my experience which i am reflecting onto you, which doesn't mean it's wrong or right.  what do you think?

Tough one Nico

Hey Nico, This is a tough question one I am not sure I have the answer to yet. Not that long ago someone on the blog wrote that laziness is just fear and I think I also read this in Turning your Mind into an Ally. Looking at procrastination and laziness from the source of fear makes a lot of sense and gives us the ability to break down the barriers that are keeping us from achieving the task at hand.  So I try to ask myself what I am afraid of, but I’m still working through it and I’m not sure I have the answers yet. Especially since it looks like you procrastinate for different reasons, it makes the most sense then that procrastination and laziness means something different for everyone.

 

To make this even more confusing I experience different levels of procrastination. It would be easier to grasp if it was an all or none situation but sometimes I am getting so much done and yet there is just one thing that I can’t get myself to do. 

 

I am not sure if it has to do with my needs not being met, although I can relate to your surrendering when you are just fueling others needs and not getting anything back in return.  Disappointment probably plays a large role. I do get afraid that when things are going well everything will be pulled out from under me because I experienced that many times. Disappointment in life and in myself for believing it was better. Fundamentally I think it might have to do with holding myself back like I don’t believe I deserve to succeed. Although I hate saying that as it makes me feel like I am portraying myself as weak and I am a pretty strong person. 

 

I have experienced a lot of pain and suffering and struggles and you are right most of my emotions were disabled in order to allow me to cope. At this point it almost feels like a dream like those memories really don’t belong to me they don’t sting as hard and sometimes I wonder if they were ever really there.  This I am grateful for.

I agree, they are a gift and very tough to experience. As long as I can bite a little chunk off at a time.  I am having a hard time watching the next generation of my family grow up. I am torn because I am sad that I waited so long to have children and I am pained because I see their needs not being met and I relate to them. And then I have moments of are you crazy being a good person and good parent who is meeting all of a child's needs appropriately is a huge job!!  And yet I am so very aware of the acute signs they throw at you moment to moment i've been observing them so much more and enjoying their innocence, their wisdom, their sense of humors and most of all I am in awe at how each one has such unique traits and refined intuition. It is great practice for when I do have a child and hopefully my awareness and the work I am doing will benefit them as well.

I often feel like that, except i have very few memories.  and the few i have, i don't like that much.  i know a big chunk is missing, but some of it comes to visit me at night when i dream.  if i am open and have the courage when i go to sleep to let those dreams come back to me, then i can dream long dreams, accept their meanings, and feel like a little part of me was let back into the whole.

 

a lot of the time i don't want to deal with it, so i do things to interupt my sleep, things that will not let me dream.  i can watch tv forever.  or i can surf the web, find some silly project to occupy my time, or just worry about silly shit.  then i sleep a restless sleep and my body and my mind feel very detached in the morning, when i don't want to get out of bed because it didn't feel like i got any sleep.  but i can't go back to sleep.  i realize it is my mind holding onto something to keep something else out.

 

last night, for example, i had a long, crazy dream.  though it scared me some and i found it disturbing on some levels, it was a vivid dream, and i can better understand its meanings and genesis.  i am comfortable accepting it as part of my experience.  in a way, i think those dreams reference those lost memories, so by accepting the dreams i am integrating them into the greater me.  so this process allowed me to wake up this morning able to connect to my feelings and feel more whole.  i guess this is a way in which my mind chooses to bite off a chunk at a time.  it is a long process.

 

but thank you for asking.  i think it takes a lot of strength and openness to the process of healing to share all that you have shared.  i appreciate it.  thank you.

the power of your dreams Nico

are amazing. I love the way you explain the integration of your dreams and your lost memories as one. The oneness of both does not represent the exact experiences that you can no longer recall but the emotional reactions to those memories. And that is where all the good stuff is; the awareness you need is how you were feeling about and perceiving those childhood experiences.  This is profound and such a gift and I am sure difficult to go through.  I can understand why it is hard to let your self relax enough to sleep and accept those dreams because they carry strong memories and emotions that are powerful, each needing it’s own space to surface, understand, hold and dissolve. That’s a lot of space and a whole lot of work.

 

I do not recall a lot of my childhood as well and for a long time I thought there had to be more terrible things that I experienced besides those I was aware of in order for the memories to have vanished. I was so afraid of those memories that I was paranoid that they were all come flooding back and I won’t be able to handle the stories they brought with them. But now I get why it is not as important to recall every last moment of my life. I find that I do not dream as often as I did when I first started recording my dreams, now it seems that I dream when I have something important that I can’t figure out. It seems like the answer comes right to the surface when I need it.

WHAT I LEARNED ON THE VINEYARD: PAGE 528, I AM THAT

 

 

Q: I have understood that personality is an illusion, and alert detachment, without loss of identity, is our point of contact with the reality. Will you, please, tell me -- at this moment are you a person or a self-aware identity?

M: I am both. But the real self cannot be described except in terms supplied by the person, in terms of what I am not. All you can tell about the person is not the self, and you can tell nothing about the self, which would not refer to the person; as it is, as it could be, as it should be. All attributes are personal. The real is beyond all attributes.

Q: Are you sometimes the self and sometimes the person?

M: How can I be? The person is what I appear to be to other persons. To myself I am the infinite expanse of consciousness in which innumerable persons emerge and disappear in endless succession.

Q: How is it that the person, which to you is quite illusory, appears real to us?

M: You, the self, being the root of all being, consciousness and joy, impart your reality to whatever you perceive. This imparting of reality takes place invariably in the now, at no other time, because past and future are only in the mind. ‘Being' applies to the now only.

Q: Is not eternity endless too?

M: Time is endless, though limited, eternity is in the split moment of the now. We miss it because the mind is ever shuttling between the past and the future. It will not stop to focus the now. It can be done with comparative ease, if interest is aroused.

Q: What arouses interest?

M: Earnestness, the sign of maturity.

Q: And how does maturity come about?

M: By keeping your mind clear and clean, by living your life in full awareness of every moment as it happens, by examining and dissolving one's desires and fears as soon as they arise.

Q: Is such concentration at all possible?

M: Try. One step at a time is easy. Energy flows from earnestness.

Q: I find I am not earnest enough.

M: Self-betrayal is a grievous matter. It rots the mind like cancer. The remedy lies in clarity and integrity of thinking. Try to understand that you live in a world of illusions, examine them and uncover their roots. The very attempt to do so will make you earnest, for there is bliss in right endeavor.

Q: Where will it lead me?

M: Where can it lead you if not to its own perfection? Once you are well-established in the now, you have nowhere else to go what you are timelessly, you express eternally.

Q: Are you one or many?

M: I am one, but appear as many.

Q: Why does one appear at all?

M: It is good to be, and to be conscious.

Q: Life is sad.

M: Ignorance causes sorrow. Happiness follows understanding.

Q: Why should ignorance be painful?

M: It is at the root of all desire and fear, which are painful states and the source of endless errors.

Q: I have seen people supposed to have realised, laughing and crying. Does it not show that they are not free of desire and fear?

M: They may laugh and cry according to circumstances, but inwardly they are cool and clear, watching detachedly their own spontaneous reactions. Appearances are misleading and more so in the case of a jnani.

Q: I do not understand you.

M: The mind cannot understand, for the mind is trained for grasping and holding while the jnani is not-grasping and not holding.

Q: What am I holding on to, which you do not?

M: You are a creature of memories; at least you imagine yourself to be so. I am entirely unimagined. I am what I am, not identifiable with any physical or mental state.

Q: An accident would destroy your equanimity.

M: The strange fact is that it does not. To my own surprise, I remain as I am -- pure awareness, alert to all that happens.

                                            Part I

 

Actually, I didn’t learn this on the Vineyard, I meditated on this in the Vineyard.  Maharaj uses the term “jnani” (or gnani), who is the knower. The jnani has realized Jnana, the realization of the unity of all things.  In Buddhism, the realization would be understanding the ultimate nature of reality, which is empty of inherent existence, without the One, or God as a first cause.

 

So, why would I spend my vacation on Martha’s Vineyard meditating on the ultimate nature of reality?  The thought of gnana, or emptiness is a transcendent ideal that requires a very strong faith if one seeks direct experience of its ultimate meaning.  But, its truth plays out, also in direct experience, from moment to moment, in this world, even on vacations, and Maharaj’s teaching here beautifully expresses how. 

 

This particular perspective (let’s call it a spiritual one) has the same source as what Megan and Nico (and James and Sacer last week) have been seeking in their posts.  They, of course, have been focusing on the psychological equivalent of a deeper spiritual understanding of mind.  Everyone is in fact asking, Why do I suffer?  Psychologically, the suffering revolves around failed relationships, or the empathic failure we all experience in childhood and the thought and feeling patterns they formed and perpetuated.  Because of those failures, the self we identify with, the personality Maharaj speaks to, strengthens its illusion of self-existence and, in turn, the emotional afflictions engendered in “self’s” beliefs.  In order for the ‘real” self -- which is in fact, no-self – to be realized, or directly known, the psychological self that lives and functions in the world must be thoroughly understood.  How else can the illusion of self be revealed?  This is the paradox of self-realization.  When we have sufficient awareness of self and no-self, the form and emptiness of Buddhist philosophy, we will better understand that realization (Gnana) is not an either/or experience; it is a nondual experience of form AND emptiness, self and no-self.  This realization frees up the personality that gets stuck on things, like other people, or other people’s personalities, or on one’s own cravings and feelings and desires and fears.  All these “things” of living-in-the-world of self and relationship no longer cause such great suffering.  and we don’t have to have realized, or reached the highest spiritual awareness, to experience the freedom of nondual awareness.  In fact, focusing on this illusion will significantly reduce the anxiety, fear, guilt, anger and shame that interfere with cultivating self-awareness.  You practice this contemplative strain of spirituality while seeking greater psychological awareness, while strengthening a sense of self.  This is the beautiful paradox of spiritual seeking.  And the result:

The mindfulness, the consistent and constant and practiced awareness of this truth, is the vacation, is the Vineyard. It is in every image, every thought, every feeling, every interaction that arises upon contact between consciousness and the world surround.  The vacation is the awareness, the understanding of the very limitations of reality the brain projects onto consciousness.  And yet it is also the beauty and potential release of its embodiment the brain generates moment to moment as it emerges from and seeks to return to its Pure Primordial state.  It is both.  And so, vacation is another screen and portal for seeking and realizing oneself, as other selves attempt to seek and realize, too.  It sure is a cool vacation, one that if practices earnestly, responsibly and with commitment, is never on vacation.

And thank you for the post.  I read the first half last night, and I read the second half this morning.  I found myself getting very annoyed reading the first half, particularly the question and answer part.  I perceived  Maharaj's tone as matter of fact and that annoyed me.  Though I understand some of the depth of his meaning, the way he describes it he has an answer for everything.  I know part of my dislike is envy of his ability to reach beyond his self and suffering, but another is the way it seems he portrays that suffering should be so readily surpassed.  Contrary, it seems to me, is that it appears this is the main part of reaching awareness; the ability to realize the illusion of the self and the memorries of suffering.

 

then the second part post i like a whole lot more.  and i think it is because you show more compassion to suffering and sufferers.

 

i do have a question, one of Maharaj's answers, that perplexed me.  he said,

 

"The mind cannot understand, for the mind is trained for grasping and holding while the jnani is not-grasping and not holding."  

 

The sentence seems to imply a something beyond the mind, the jnani.  however, how can you go beyond the mind without the mind?  i mean you need something to be able to think of the jnani in the first place?

HEY NICO, IT'S GREAT TO BE BACK

and find that the blog is still alive and well.  You and megan have been having some great dialogue.  As usual, you pick up on the more subtle aspects of the posts.  To your last question regarding mind, this is exactly the paradox of self-relaization: you need mind to dissolve mind, in the same way you need self to dissolve self.  This is why I have made an effort to integrate the psychological and spiritual aspects of consciousness.  And, again, you are correct about Maharaj's making direct and simple statements about realization and how one can feel inadequate or frustrated by its ostensible simplification.  The truth is, however, is that it is simple, but only after it's not.  In fact, the process leading up to these deeper levels of awareness that have a molting effect on afflictive emotions is quite difficult.  Anyone, who is in or has been in an analytic process knows this.  I still suffer everyday, even after a lifetime of process.  But, the difference now is that the suffering doesn't seem to penetrate my being to the point of contaminating my understanding of nondual reality or undermine my ability to consistently feel joy, love and compassion. 

 

Suffering is always there but not always here.  And so, because form is emptiness and emptiness is form, mind exists with the purpose of realizing its own illusoriness, its lack of independent, permanent existence.  And when it does, it realizes that Pure Awareness was always there and that time and mind itself were only appearances, not real.  That understanding right there, that time and mind itself are only appearances, is freedom from suffering.  When I have a glimpse of that reality through direct experience, there is only joy.  This is why I sit, to open up that state of understanding into an enduring trait of nondual awareness.

 Hi Om, James, Nico, Emily and all of our friends, I am thinking about your post James and Om's response and reference to his earlier posts on empathy. James feel free to jump in if you have a response and time before I can. I don't want to hold up the conversation. 

WHAT EMPATHY IS NOT

 


 

Hey Megan.  Thanks for your interest in empathy.  Here are some more thoughts.  My observations tell me that empathy seems to be a lot more difficult to achieve than people might think, even for seekers.  Empathy is not the ability to talk about empathy nor is it acting empathic.  Empathy is being empathic and requires an alignment and focus of our thoughts, feelings and actions as we orient ourselves towards the other.  In fact, empathy enables us to position ourselves in the other’s consciousness.  Empathy is not about reading someone else’s mind, though a deeply empathic person’s highly cultivated intuition gives the impression that our feelings and even thoughts are being read.  In empathy, there is a caring and concern for the other that is active, consistent, overarching and responsible.  In fact, empathy and responsibility go hand in hand.  Being empathic, I consistently respond to the relationship through you.  It is an act, a gesture, a thank you, a helping hand, a questioning, a continuous thinking of what the other might need and how she feels.  Thinking of or about the other is not enough; empathy shows itself in sharing, in a curious inquiring, in more listening than talking and more asking of than for.  The focus of empathy is on loving more than being loved.  Focus on being loved is a failed empathy because it is self-centered.  And self-centeredness is at the heart of failed empathy.  People often mistake self-centeredness for cultivating self-awareness.  True self-awareness is self-knowledge learned through lovingkindness and compassion.  Many people, because they felt emotionally burdened as children and responsible for their parents’ emotional stability, take the position that it’s my turn; I’m going to focus on myself now.   This is a mistake and it stunts growth.  Another substitute for empathy is accommodation.  Accommodation is also a failed empathy because the accommodator always feels a lack and her self-esteem is dependent on the praise she receives for accommodating.  Accommodation is always outward focused and often leaves one feeling drained.  Empathy is always inwardly focused and is its own reward.  There is a joy in caring for and giving.  The heart overflows and it is the overflowing that flows towards the other.

Orientation towards the other

I agree with you empathy is more difficult to achieve than most think. This is a great description of what empathy is and isn’t. So now that we know what Empathy is and is not, how do we focus our thoughts, feelings and actions towards the other? 

10 DAILY EMPATHY-BUILDING EXERCISES

 

 

  1. Think of someone other than yourself.  I don’t mean worry about, obsess over or be angry with.  I mean think about what others are feeling or what they need.  Try to identify with others in pain, not merging with their pain or anger, just experiencing their pain.  When I pass others who are sick or handicapped, I say Om Mani Padme Hum.  My heart immediately opens.
  2. Say thank you, it's a great source of generosity.  I am amazed at how few people do this.  Thank the waiter, the cab driver, your lover or friend, etc.  Thank me when I hold the elevator door for you or press the button to your floor instead of me having to say thank you for you and make you look like an ass.  I don't know if anyone here has met Nico but he is one of the most thoughtful, generous and gracious people I have met.  He always says thank you and makes you feel warm in his presence.  He reminds me that there is a humility in thanking others that reminds us of our basic interconnectedness.
  3. Express gratitude and appreciation.  We can’t do this enough.  People tend to focus too much on what they’re missing, and resentment, jealousy, envy and bitterness replace gratitude.  In my practice I wake up every morning with the words, I’m grateful to be alive so that I can cultivate compassion for all beings without exception.
  4. Sit.  Meditation is the most powerful empathy-builder because it diminishes self-centeredness and the materialist mind.
  5. Do the dishes.  Empathy is in the simple tasks and being responsible to relationship by making others around you comfortable and cared for.
  6. Recognize the other.  We all need recognition.  Even the Dalai Lama needs recognition.  Bring out the best in the other by elevating her and mirroring her feelings and needs.
  7. Be responsible to relationship.  Respond respond respond in a way that brings the other closer or that lets the other go because the other is not healthy or able to meet your needs.  When someone  calls you, respond.  When someone writes to you, respond.  When someone  needs you, respond.  Don't disappear.  I am particularly reminded of Emily.  It feels as if Emily always shows up and always responds.  She just has that empathic presence.  I know I can rely on her to respond, even if she doesn't want to.
  8. Listen.  I mean really listen.  No, no I mean REALLY listen.
  9. The four C’s.  As a daily practice, orient mind to clarity, control, compassion and consistency in relating.
  10. Think of someone other than yourself.  Don’t we return to 1 after we reach 10?

 

my struggle with this empathy business

i love Megan's question to this post, and then Om's post on empathy-building exercises. yet...

 

something is unsatisfying about this for me at this moment. there's something about my needs missing from this. not that what Om writes about empathy (or what Om describes as empathy-building exercises) means a dismissal of my needs, or anything like that. it is clear that empathy-building is itself built upon and greatly enhances the meeting of my needs and my own ability to recognize and meet those needs. it's the "at this moment" part that i'm getting caught up on. it's sort of like this:

 

if i can't see beyond my own self-centeredness, i am stuck and will be greatly limited in my ability to cultivate empathy -- to become empathic. yet mustn't i, in a way, care for myself self-centeredly if i am to begin to be able to transcend that very limitation? i've experienced empathy and believe that i am capable of, or that i AM, or that i operate from, some lower levels, so to speak, of empathy. yet i am still stuck in some self-centeredness. for example, right now i feel there's a very particular sort of relationship -- a feeling, really -- that i need in order to move into a deeper practice, in order to cultivate an even more sharp awareness, in order to become that much more empathic in that much finer and brighter and clearer a way. i just feel unable in my other relationships to break out, to really release, to let go and let in, to breathe and also to see... i feel stuck -- and it's not the perfect relationship i need, it's just the feeling... i've experienced this feeling, and i've found it to be the safest, yet the most challenging space; the space where i've thus far met the fewest limitations, and the greatest responsibility; the space where empathy is my natural state, and i can look clearly into that experience; the space where i am relationship, and my self-centeredness is no longer depended upon. i have felt this feeling -- and in a very imperfect relationship at that -- but only in this very particular space. i don't think the sort of experience i'm describing is limited to the intimacy found between two lovers looking inside each other's looking, so to speak, but for me it's perhaps a stepping stone i need in order to practice practice practice until empathy just sort of is and doesn't require anything so lofty as all that jazz. maybe i'm idealizing, or just plain kidding myself. i'm not sure. but at this moment i can't sign up on this empathy-building process any more than i have and do each and every day; i've got smaller fish to fry.

THE EMPATHICALLY CHALLENGED AT THIS MOMENT, NOT EXACTLY

 

 

James, there is something about your honesty that I appreciate despite your empathic challenges.  In fact, it is this type of honesty that allows for a more uncomplicated development of empathy-- for example, the need to hide, conceal or deny one’s limitations leads to shame, which in turn leads to a very complicated psychology.  The challenge for you, however, is to keep pushing up against your self-centeredness rather than using your awareness as a way to become complacent.  I’m not suggesting you would or are doing just that, but that is still my challenge to you.  Why, for example, is being more responsive a big as opposed to a small fish?  When you say you’ve got smaller fish to fry, what exactly does that mean?  And how are some of these playfully so-called empathy-builders big fish?

 

And what does it mean to care for yourself “self-centeredly”?  “i just feel unable in my other relationships to break out, to really release, to let go and let in, to breathe and also to see...”  This sentence like most of your post feels too abstract for me to understand what you actually mean.  There is some real treasure in this post but it eludes me. 

EMPATHIZE ME, PLEASE

 

 

It’s 9:47.  I’m sitting here at the computer drinking my smoothie.  I woke earlier coming out of a dream about an old friend who’s pregnant, said I’m grateful to be alive so that I can cultivate compassion for all beings without exception, sat, read some interesting psychoanalytic literature on empathy, some news and some emails; made some appointments.  The mind is a bit restless, unsettled, even concerned about some friends who are in pain.  That very old feeling of helplessness arises.  What to do? mind says.  I’m watching it reach outside itself, to the reified world of things and parts, seeking solutions to situations that have no immediate solutions.  But, mind wants to slip into an old mode of fixing to feel safe, to bring peace back.  But, it won’t happen, it never does.  There is nothing to do.  And yet, that’s not entirely true, if doing means action.  But, action needs to be internal, resetting mind back to its center.  Yes, I will rest the body by breathing or lying still for a while (or even some yoga or exercise if I can); but, it is mind that needs to return to its center, that space of stillness and silence.  There is no other way.  I choose an object of focus: faith.  It’s big, but it is the right tool for the job.  I remind myself of my faith, faith in enlightenment, faith in wisdom and compassion; faith in emptiness and the joy and omniscience of Pure Awareness.  There is a residual shame always lurking in helplessness, and whose voice says, you’ve failed, you haven’t lived up to your ideals.  It’s deadly, this shame, really.  It wants to lure mind in to memory, to an old sick way of seeking emotional ties and staying loyal to an old family system that utterly failed mind’s empathic needs.  But, it is here nonetheless.  Mind exists in memories and those memories come from actual lived experiences.  There is no other way around it.  And, in a way, those memories live on through repeating old habits or thought patterns.  As Faulkner said, the past isn’t even past.  But, existence isn’t real, it merely exists.  That is what I share with mind as I attempt to nourish it with a new way of relating: with light and love and the experience of emptiness I have come to know more than the experiences of shame I have come from.  Yes, there is something I can do, and I find myself doing it, right now, in the form of writing.  I remember somewhere I was told to sit, write and love.  That’s something I can do until the maelstrom of mind opens up to the blue of sky waiting.  That’s really something.  Thank you.

hey, smoothie man, i haven't stopped thinking about your empathetic scramble that you have started.  the ideas have been bouncing around in my head all week, but i haven't been able to grab any of them to coherently post them here.

 

on first thought though, the one idea that perpetually comes to mind is imagination.  imagination because empathy requires us to imagine what the other person must be feeling.  and from that imagination, we then need more information to atune the image closer to the reality.  even then, it is a reflective exercise mirroing our own experiences from our pasts.

 

the interesting part here is that we learn from our past, from the memories of our past, however, empathy requires us to be in the here and now, finding out and imagining the other person's experience, talking to them.

 

yet i can't help but think of this as an imagination trap, a trap we can't really fully escape.  but maybe that is the point of the trap, to teach us that we can't escape because there is nowhere to escape to because we are all interconnected.  my molecules are interacting with your molecules, with all the molecules that make up everything that is.  is it only the mind that believes it is separate when it really is not.

SMOOTHIE IS AS SMOOTHIE DOES: RESPONSE TO NICO

 

Nico, I assume you are addressing me.  I just watched a deeply emotional moment in our history as a nation and felt, in a very palpable way, a shift in the collective consciousness of humanity.  A black man was nominated for president of the United States.  And he accepted.  I accept the nomination for President of the United States of America.  I started crying.  Obama’s entire speech was infused with and pointed to empathic relating: I am my brother’s keeper; I am my sister’s keeper, he said.  Unity cannot occur without empathy, without the realization of the inextricable interconnectedness of humanity.  Is this imagination?  Or is this the knowing that emerges out of understanding which is, in turn, the effect of a direct empathic experience.  As defined imagination is “the ability to form mental images, or the ability to spontaneously generate images within one's own mind.”  If this is how we define imagination, then indeed imagination is the cognitive aspect of generating empathy.  But, empathy is more than this cognitive function; empathy requires an internalization of empathic attunement that one has already directly relationally experienced.  I think this is what you mean by “from that imagination, we then need more information to attune the image closer to the reality.  even then, it is a reflective exercise mirroring our own experiences from our pasts.”

What you call “learning from the past” is internalization and then applying it interpersonally in the here and now of relationship.  It is an active, ongoing process and practice, and supported by action in addition to words.  Words are not enough for empathy to be true. 

 

Nico, I’m a bit confused about referring to imagination as a trap.  How can something so dependent on freedom be a trap?  How can the realization of interconnectedness be a trap?  True freedom is in the understanding, the apprehension of emptiness.  True emptiness is empathically realized.

i agree, om, obama's moment

i agree, om, obama's moment was and is an incredible moment in this country's history.  it helps to remind us how far and how slowly change takes to happen.

 

on your last question, when i use the word trap, i use it to highlight the limitations of our abilities to sense.  for example, i can be having a conversation with A, and A is telling me about this and that, all the while i notice A seems distracted, preoccupied with something else.  i spy the fine details of worry yet i don't really know.  so i wait for a moment in the conversation when i can ask A if something is worrying A.  now here, even before i get an answer, i am imagining the possibility that A is worried yet hasn't said anything about it.  i have to then ask myself, am i really picking up real signals of worry or am i projecting it by letting my imagination get carried away.

 

even after A tells me nothing is wrong, i still get the signals of worry.  do i trust my intuition or do i trust A, who just told me everything was fine.  the trap is this constant method of having to check perception from projection.  can it be done?

Nico, I love my smoothie every morning.  I aspire to become a smoothie.  I was practically on my knees last night when Obama took the stage and said those words: I accept the nomination for President of the United States of America.  I was standing on the front seat next to my mother when John F Kennedy was shot and I remember the mornings when Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were shot.  And I remember the Civil Rights struggle throughout my life and the very slow and yet fast dissolution of that gross aspect of racism that contaminated every human being, not only in this country, but in the world.  I still feel the shame of it all.  But, like children having to witness the abuse of their brothers and sisters, we sought to heal the split and divisions that created racism.  Consciousness will heal if you give it a chance.  And I witnessed it in such a striking, profound and palpable way last night.  I’m still teary in the same way as when my insights led to forgiveness and renewed hope with my parents and family.  I felt once again the hope that my deeper faith attempts to rekindle every morning.  I am grateful to be alive so that I can cultivate compassion for all beings without exception.  This is what that prayer looks like in real time and in real terms.  Emptiness IS form.  And empathy is alive though still very ill.  These are the moments we wait for when we sit day after day and through each om mani padme hum.  This is what we wait for as we’re moving through a therapeutic struggle to feel again and experience love, joy, compassion and equanimity.  And, most importantly, understanding.  Obama, when he says that John McCain cares but doesn’t get it, means just this.  That change comes from a recognition, from a deep caring emerging out of the awareness that we are inextricably tied to each other.  Emptiness is form.  We must change our minds until they understand the fragile bonds between us and the necessity to reach out to each other in some concrete way and say, I understand you.

Which leads me to your very thoughtful statement and question:

 

“even after A tells me nothing is wrong, i still get the signals of worry.  do i trust my intuition or do i trust A, who just told me everything was fine.  the trap is this constant method of having to check perception from projection.  can it be done?”

 

My answer to you is simple: when you fully trust yourself, you fully understand A.  A is the other of us all who we see with clarity in the transparency of our wisdom.  Trust yourself.  You must trust yourself, and never stop questioning yourself.  Both will ultimately meet in wisdom.

the key is in the small concrete moments: i feel stuck; i don't feel safe.

 

i found that feeling i refer to, that feeling of recognition -- that feeling of "looking inside each other's looking" -- when i was with Eva almost a year ago. that relationship, unfortunately, didn't last very long. in my most recent romance i felt even more stuck and unsafe than i do in the rest of my relationships. i tried to force what i found with Eva onto a much more limited relationship, and ended up feeling disappointed, betrayed, and remorseful. however, painful as this was for me, it's been slowly opening up a new perspective... there's some shift in me and in my seeing... there's a new degree of seriousness; i am more serious about what i need in a relationship. (i hope that all isn't also too abstract -- it's about as concrete as i feel comfortable with.)

 

so what that sentence you quote means is that i feel stuck, and that i don't feel safe. i can see many of the reasons this is so. i have some very safe spaces to turn to, so i'm not complaining anymore about not having anyone trustworthy around me. no, there are bunches of other barriers now. truth be told, i'm sort of okay with that right now. i don't think it's complacency, either. (i didn't say, "i'm gonna just do nothing for a while" -- i said "i've got smaller fish to fry." i'm still fryin'.) i don't think it's complacency to sink into my fear and to just hang out there for a little while. i don't feel safe? then that's okay right now. this is a new way of taking care of myself that it is worth exploring. i know there is no actual risk of me giving up, or anything like that. but things are unclear right now -- you know, i feel stuck. things aren't clear to me; my feelings are clear enough to identify, but not clear enough to understand, so i don't actually recognize them yet. what am i feeling? i can answer the question, but if you ask what the feelings are about it's a bit more murky. i've no ability, therefore, to make the sorts of decisions i need to make -- i've nothing to clearly respond to. and don't even get me started with empathy, i'm too muddied at the moment: i just can't see well enough.

 

so instead of giving myself a hard time for this, i'm observing, i'm letting myself simmer a bit without judging it or thinking i should be doing more or doing better. it might even be irresponsible, particularly when i'm with others -- that sucks, i don't like being irresponsible, but if that's the potential cost of this decision i'm making than that's the risk i'm taking.

 

"smaller fish" was not a judgment. i'm not claiming smaller fish are pitiful or anything like that. i didn't say that the exercises were big fish, i said that empathy-building is the bigger fish. the smaller fish to fry is getting in touch with my feelings. there's not really any other decision i'm capable of making at this moment, so it's "smaller fish" in the sense of a food chain of openness. okay well, i just woke up after going to bed very late, so i hope some of this is a little clearer, but if not keep on challengin' away. like i said, maybe i'm just kidding myself.

James I think you bring up a very important point in your post when you talk about being able to practice empathy with your significant other. I agree, and have experienced this myself. To me practicing empathy with yourself and significant other are huge tasks, or fish to fry and require a daily responsibility. 

 

Isn’t it amazing how so much of our posts and the community we have built among this blog is cultivating our practice or empathy. At least once a day I think of all of you and smile and wish you all well. I think of Nico and his walks and dreams, his strength. I think of Emily sitting and crying as she packs Anya up to move into college. Of Anya and the new journey she is about to experience. Of Arnold, his fear of death and his keen eye for beauty. Of Noah and Celi on the farm, cultivating healthy crops and community and you and your sweet and intimate songs and what feels to me like a true passion for knowledge and growth. I think of Caterina and Nadine cultivating compassion through rooftop yoga and Buddhist lessons and Camila striving everyday to teach her tenants to stand up for themselves and their community. I think of all of you and smile as I walk to the train sometimes, I feel love and warmth and good wishes towards you during small moments between of silence during busy day.   

 

I am here

I know I have been absent for awhile in terms of writing, but I am still here, reading along.  I am simply enjoying and digesting all that is being shared.  This empathy discussion is really interesting.  I love the 10 daily empathy-building exercises and can see the results of having cultivated some of these more over the past few years, although I know I have a long way to go in terms of the intricacies of how it plays out in relationship and difficult interactions in daily life.  In trying to develop a meditation practice, I have found it tremendously helpful and powerful to focus on my gratitude towards the people in my life that have brought me to where I am today (including all of you here) and on sending love and light to those who are struggling.  I agree wholeheartedly with Om about the way that Nico embodies generosity and graciousness.  Indeed it was one of the first things I noticed about him.  He always makes conversation with service people (how long is your shift? where are you from? has it been busy today?), and makes sure to leave a big tip. He holds doors, carries packages, and always walks on the street side when walking down the sidewalk with you. It doesn't just come from good old-fashioned upbringing, although I'm sure that's part of it, but a sincere thoughtfulness towards others.  Some of this might sound patriarchal or sexist, but these are things I try to do as well because it shows people that you are thinking of them.   As Nico has also shared, he loves to do the dishes.  He even used to clean the cat box at my house, which I always appreciated greatly.  I have to work on both of those chores a bit myself.

Being a woman, I can relate to the common confusion between accomodation and empathy and the draining and resentful feelings the former leaves you with, as opposed to the joyful fulfillment of the latter.  I know men fall into this trap as well, but I think the martyr/victim  role is something that women gravitate to more easily due to society's expectation that we constantly subordinate our own needs to those of others, especially men.    Men might have a difficult time with empathy for the opposite reason.  I'd be interested in hearing what folks think about that.

 

Megan, I was touched by your post about how you think of each of us each day.  I think of all of you a lot too and am grateful that each of your seeking, sharing and amazing introspection has enabled me to stretch myself in ways I never thought of before.

We’ve missed you. It is really nice to come home to a long weekend and have lots of great posts to catch-up on.  I am surprised how quickly Labor Day has come and although not as sad as I’ve been in the past when summer has ended I am still surprised to find us past Labor Day. I am feeling more that summer is a state of mind, and the energy it awakes inside of me is always there, I just have to nurture it a little longer in the winter months to feel that zest all year long. I’ve experienced a gradual shift in the way I experience summer, I imagine that shift will continue to change the shape of the rest of the seasons and I’m looking forward to how they will unfold. I wanted to get back to point you brought up in your post on empathy about woman and the common confusion between accommodation and empathy. I agree with you that woman fall into this trap easier and I have heard the men in our community talk about accommodating others often. I’m not sure of much more I can say about this except that I’ve always been a big accommodator. I used to think this was a great trait, I could almost always guess what everyone needed and have it ready for them before they even asked. But as you said I always felt drained and resentful. I’d now need to use my unique attunement towards being empathetic towards others and their needs. I find this to be a struggle. The practice and bridge from accommodation to empathy is difficult my biggest struggle is finding the right words to use. In wanting to reach out to a friend who is suffering with a broken heart over losing his sister, or comforting a friend whose boss is in a rotten mood and taking it out on her or another friend who is dreading a two-week stint of long hours at work. I can put myself into each of these people shoes; I can see their suffering before they even share it with me, in their subtleties and I can certainly feel their pain. I can relate. I can understand how they feel and imagine their suffering. I want more than anything to alleviate that suffering. But I am at a loss of what to say to make them feel understood and better about their situation.  The right words and sentiment always seem to escape me at that moment of their greatest need.

Hello friends.  I feel as if I have been away for so long, and perhaps I have.   As Noah says, “Operation drop that girl off” ( Anya) at Smith is complete and I am already entering a new space within myself.  She and I cried so much, cuddled, and on the last night before she left – when all of us were, like in the days of long ago, in one big hotel room together, she and I slept together.   She had her final moment as my young child and I got to pour all my love and protection into her.  What came to mind as she cried and expressed her fears is that what Arn and I  had given her in the way of comfort, love and support; whatever strengths she had gained, is in her.  We gave so that she could take  She was ready to stand on her own two feet.   But we needed to cry.  We needed to express all the love, fears, joys that were in us.    And how grateful I am to Anya and to myself that we didn’t hold anything back – we just let it all out. Our love for each other was expressed so completely.  I live with no doubts.  The last few weeks,  I kept bursting into tears then apologizing.  Anya just hugged  me and said, “ I am so happy you feel this way.  Imagine what my life would have been like if you didn’t.”

 

And when it was time, she just said, “you can go now,” and turned her back and walked away.  Noah took this journey with us and it was beautiful to see the two of them stepping out of their roles within the family to stand together as two people who cared deeply for each other.   He sent her off in a way that no one else could: a big brother supporting his little sister as she stepped into a new world, and seeing her as a peer and growing friend.  In my heart, there is a frame around this moment.

 

It is not that I am free of tears now.   The feelings pour forth.  They are rich and abundant.   I am here, in my room, rearranged to mark a new chapter, but also allowing myself to wander for brief periods into the past.  The images move like clips of an old movie.   I see my children in their beds, curled on their sides, stuffed animals tucked in their armpits or around their heads.  I see the crawling little people, the wild, running toddlers, the awkward adolescents, and growing teenagers, the beautiful adults they have become.  It is all here, in this house, in these walls, in the elm tree out front, in the air, inside me.   There is no time, no space, nothing separating me from everything that came before, everything that is, and everything that will be.  And still, I weep.   I can not put a name to the tears – they are tears of happiness, joy, sadness, sorrow; they are wistful, longing, settled and peaceful.   This moment of letting go, really letting go, was précisely what I was so terrified of for so much of my life, and at the same time what I longed for – for it means that I have loved, really loved and that love continues over time, space, great distances.   

 

I am only starting to read the posts that I have missed.  Oh, I moan, that it is so hard to catch up.   I am thinking about empathy.   Not having read carefully yet, I don’t know if anyone has spoken about this.  Without coming to a place where we can see ourselves clearly, accept all parts of ourselves and love them – then we cannot give to others what we can not give to ourselves.    And it is the very things that have caused pain in ourselves, the very wounds, that are the openings into caring for others..  

 

And as I write this I am trying to see outside myself, have empathy ( even compassion) for Mr. Plumbean, who, angered by my leaving him for several days, bit my ear and my finger ------ and now, locked in his cage, is letting out little crying sounds.   Damn Bird.  .
